Ek Mein Aur Ek Thu, dono mile is tharah….. a lovely number from Khel Khel mein (1975), everyone would have hummed these lines a number of times in our young age. Well, that is the name of the latest movie from Dharma Productions (Yes!! be prepared for ‘Tum paas aaye” rerecording yet again, or simply walk in 3 minutes late) & UTV.
Now, the title is a rip off from an old hit number, is the movie a rip off from the Hollywood flick “What happens in vegas”? That has been the question on every one’s mind (except the cast and crew of EMAET), the answer is NO J.
EMAET is a “good” coming off age movie for bollywood after Delhi belly, guess Imran Khan is hell bent on maturing bollywood J. The plot of the movie is quite simple, it’s tells you the story of 16 days in the life of the protagonist after he loses his job in Vegas.
Rahul kapoor (Imran Khan) is the depressed “Tight A$$” son of Boman Irani & Ratna Pathak Shah (Remember Imran’s Mother in Jaane tu… ya jaane na?) who are living a high society life as the accomplished entrepreneur and his beauty conscious wife in Mumbai. Rahul is packed off to Vegas to get work experience in Architecture so that he can handle the family business some day. All of a sudden on a Christmas eve Rahul loses his job, he decides to hide this from his parents and on the same day he bumps in to Raina Bregenza a hair stylist who just dumped her boy friend (Who is a complete jerk according to her) and is almost bankrupt. Eventually Rahul and Raina both decide to consult psychiatrist on the same day thus bumping in to each other again. Turn of events leads them to a bar and they get drunk till their nose. And, the drunk couple gets married the same night to put send their lives on a roller costar ride.
Once back to their senses the next day, they decide to Annul the marriage (This term is not very popular in India, but, going by the way we are pacing, it would catch up quite fast) and while in the process Rahul falls for Raina. Does Raina love Rahul? How does Rahul set his life back on track again? All these are best answered on screen.
I said EMAET is a coming off age movie mainly because of the way the movie is directed, first up the director is a young chap; he has visualized the movie the way it should be taken and then stuck to his visualization. The movie has subtle humor running throughout the script, the casting is good. The dialogues are straight and more modern. The cinematography is great and Las Vegas is a visual treat by itself, music by Amit Trivedi is above average, the number “AuntyJi” has the potential to get in to club houses. I personally liked the “Aaaja Aaaja mein hum pyar tera” rendition in the back ground in the date scene.
This is Not a Love Story for the Valentines weekend and focuses more on friendship and is a perfect example of how a “Positive” can motivate a “Negative” to become the “perfectly Averaged”. The movies has great performance by all its lead characters though it might look like Bomman Irani has still not gotten out of his 3 Idiots shoes and Kareena is still stuck with the +ve vibes of her “Jab we Met” character. EMAET is a feel good movie and good entertainer. The climax is the USP of the movie and will be much appreciated by young Indians.
Watch EMAET if you enjoy subtle humor and +ve movies. I would go with 3/5 for EMAET.
